For those who aren’t familiar with Chrononauts, the point of the game is to change the timeline by changing “linchpin” events — if Emmett Brown hadn’t hit his head on the toilet while changing a clock in 1955, he wouldn’t have invented the flux capacitor, for instance. If that hadn’t happened, many other events wouldn’t have occurred, either, and changing one event causes ripples to go through the timestream, which you can “patch” with alternate histories.
